It's Simple

We are a friendly organisation based in Windermere, nestled in the heart of the picturesque British Lake District. Our mission is to provide local businesses with temporary staff, primarily in the hotel industry, although we have a number of placements with cafes and other venues.

If you are local, have experience in the hospitality industry in one or more of our offered job descriptions, and are looking for extra work that can be organised around your current commitments, then we may well have well paid hours for you.

  • Housekeepers

    We send chefs to a number of establishments in the South Lakes. If you match any of the the job descriptions below, and want extra hours, get in touch! We may have a place for you.

  • Kitchen Porters

Job Description


The Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining high standards in all guest rooms, preparing rooms for new arrivals, refreshing guests’ rooms that are staying another night and cleaning public areas.

You should operate a very high standard of cleaning and general housekeeping. Ask the client and/or us for details of these standards if you are not sure.


  • Previous Housekeeping experience is essential.
  • Have a cheery, positive outlook.
  • Be flexible and able to fit in with the clients wishes and preferences e.g. breaks, uniform, where to park etc.
  • Physically fit.
  • Work with high attention to detail.
  • Able to work well independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in an organised way.
  • Take initiative in solving problems.
  • Promote positive relationships in communication and cooperation with all co-workers, client
    staff and guests.

Job Description


The chef is responsible for preparing high-quality food and presenting them beautifully and in accordance with client expectations, also maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in the kitchen and prep areas.

  • Proven working experience as a chef.
  • Supreme attention to detail.
  • Have a high understanding of and demonstrate 100% compliance with Food Safety Legislation including compliance with allergen information.
  • Super organised and always ready for service.
  • Great communication and leadership skills.

  • Personal appearance must be clean and professional and in accordance with SJSH Grooming Policy.

Job Description

Reception & Waiters

As a general assistant you will get the opportunity to work across all operational departments for example restaurant, kitchen, bar and housekeeping. This will enable to develop many different skill sets. The general assistant is responsible for high standards of delivery in many areas.


  • Cheery helpful outlook.
  • Experience in hotels is essential, 3 years minimum
  • Versatile and a proven delivery of cheffing (commis level), kitchen porter and guest hosting services
  • Housekeeping to ensure the highest standards of presentation and cleanliness 
  • To achieve these aims through effective teamwork with staff and clients
  • Good organisational skills

Job Description

Kitchen Porters

The KP is responsible for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in the kitchen and prep areas, support of kitchen staff and the fast and immaculate turnover of cooking tools, utensils and crockery etc.


  • Possess a cheery and helpful attitude.
  • Physically fit.
  • A fast learner with an interest in kitchen work.
  • Adhere to health and safety rules.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • The ability to work unsupervised in a busy environment.

Things to Think About


No ‘corporate perks’

The industry often supplements low salaries with benefits like subsidised accommodation. St John’s Staff Hire does not offer the following:

  • Sick pay
  • Maternity/paternity pay
  • Holiday pay
  • Staff accommodation
  • Fuel allowance or transport expenses
  • Guaranteed hours

We pay weekly

The responsibility for sending your invoice to us before midnight every Sunday lies with you, but provided your timesheets tally, you will be paid by 6pm on the following Tuesday every week. See your hard earned money, fast!

We pay well

We offer a starting hourly rate of pay of £10.50, rising to £11 after everyone is happy that you have settled in.  It is important to note, however, that as we do not employ you directly, you will not be in receipt of sick pay or holiday pay etc., and are responsible for paying your own tax and NI contributions.

No guaranteed shifts

We can not guarantee shifts for you if clients do not like your manner, personal grooming standards, your attendance, or the standard of your work. Although we a lot of shifts to fill across a wide range of organisations, the list is not exhaustive.

Self assessment

As someone who is self-employed, you are responsible for paying your own tax and National Insurance contributions. We can offer to advise you, but no more.


We can not guarantee shifts for you if clients do not like your manner, personal grooming standards, your attendance, or the standard of your work. Nor can we guarantee consistent, full-time work all year around.
