About St John's Staff Hire

It is thought that 59% of the hospitality workforce in Cumbria is comprised of EU Nationals. Supposing the higher threshold (£30,000 per annum post-Brexit) is upheld for immigration, the pool from which Cumbrian businesses will be able to recruit will surely begin to dwindle.

Even the lower threshold of £22,000 that is currently in consideration is several thousand pounds above the average hospitality wage, with demand for staff in the industry constantly outstripping the supply.

The average wage within the hospitality industry in Cumbria is currently £17,000 per annum, a figure some £13,000 short of the highest proposed threshold for EU Nationals wanting to immigrate post-Brexit.

All things considered, it looks likely that the cost of staffing within the hospitality industry is set to rise steeply should Brexit occur. One way that businesses might adapt to these changes, is to consider alternative means of staffing.

Instead of over-staffing in order to cover holidays and sickness, something that is viable given the current average wage despite the invariable idle time, businesses might want to consider hiring temporary staff on a more ad-hoc basis.

Current staffing

EU Nationals (% of hospitality workforce in Cumbria) 59%

After Brexit

EU workers who meet lowest proposed threshold 41%
Non-EU workers who meet threshold 37%

"Fifty-nine per cent of our staff are EU Nationals, we will be left with a gaping hole with nobody to fill the gap. [...] disconnected with the effects this could have not just in the hospitality sector, but on food, transport, retail, health and social care and farming to name a few."
